"That Guy" Of The Day

Hey look at that guy.

What guy? That guy.

The one over there who looks like he just got smacked in the face with a bed pan.

The guy who looks like he got slapped with a dirty piece of ham.

That guy? Little Steven?

Yeah that guy.

BLAKROC and Black Friday

In more ways than one today is BLA(c)K Friday. It's the biggest shopping day of the year, where it might not be be odd to see two mothers fighting over the last Nintendo Wii at Best Buy while their husbands are next door at Sears duking it out over the last set of Craftsman Power Tools.

Too much man!

Anyway, here's something to celebrate. Today the BlakRoc album drops! If you haven't been following, BlakRoc is The Black Keys project with: Billy Danze (of MOP), Jim Jones, Nicole Wray, NOE, Mos Def, ODB, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, Raekwon, & RZA.

Pick it up here

Enjoy the day and night everyone.

Thanksgiving Eve

Tonight is Thanksgiving Eve. Celebrate. Have Fun. Be safe.

Enjoy the night everyone.

The Eigenharp

Check out this crazy new instrument created by Eigen Labs. It's called the Eigenharp Alpha and is an electronic stick-like (it actually looks like a bassoon) instrument with a breath pipe, 120 top keys, 12 percussion keys on the bottom and a whole bunch of other stuff! It has a lot of versatility due to all the different patches on it and you can play sounds resembling anything from an electronic guitar to a clarinet.

Oh and it's only 3,950 euros. Actually there is a smaller version called the "Pico" that runs about 350 euros (which isn't that bad). Anyway, check it out!

Vampire Weekend: New Album Release Date!

Mark your calendars kiddies.

Everyone's favorite(well one of mine at least) hip and trendy band will soon be releasing the followup to their fantastic 2008 debut. That's right! Vampire Weekend will drop their new album, entitled Contra, on January 12, 2010. I love me some VampWeek (no I don't actually call them that) and I am more than excited for their new album. If you still haven't listened to their first, seriously do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Check out their new single "Cousins"

Timbaland Shock Value 2

I saw this a while ago but I forgot about it until now.

From Uncut Magazine

According to publicized reports, the album will feature appearances from Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, The Fray, Chris Daughtry, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Brandy, Keri Hilson and Young Money superstar Drake.

Yeah. "Shock Value" is a perfect title for this album. Miley Cyrus? Daughtry? NICKELBACK? (does anyone actually like Nickelback?) Drake? Real original. Timbo...really? What the hell is wrong with you? Maybe a better name for this would be "MakeMoneyOffShitPopMusciansThatAreHotNow". Good Lord Man.

Flaming Lips: "Watching the Planets" Video

*WARNING*
*EVERYONE IN THIS VIDEO IS BUTT ASS NAKED*
*WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK*

I've been waiting to see this for quite some time and ummmm it's been...a while since I've seen something so outrageous, disturbing?, great? Just because I don't really get it doesn't mean there's something wrong with it. God I love the Flaming Lips.

For some reason I can't embed the video so go to NME and watch it there.

Or you can watch a squeaky clean (and fully clothed) live version HERE.

PLORK: Princeton Laptop Orchestra

Check out what Princeton is working on HERE.

Here's my opinion on the whole thing. I love electronic music, and Princeton might be on to something. They aren't exactly the first to try something like this (maybe the first university). A lot of electronic acts out there are using laptops on a network to make music and send back and forth information to each other, but this might be the largest scale of its' use that I've seen at least.

It is my belief that in its' very essence music is social. Of course their are certain aspects of music that are more personal. People write songs about personal experiences, feelings, etc but they also evoke feelings in the people that listen to them, sort of making it a shared experience. The orchestra kind of has something social going for it, I mean an orchestra in itself is a pretty social event (except for the fact that one person conducts it and the music that's played is usually written by one person.....well some bands are like that too, shit where am I going with this? Actually there's nothing wrong with an orchestra playing the music one person wrote, it's actually extremely impressive that one person can do such a thing. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and the countless other composers are all geniuses. )

Anyway, everyone is in a room together, that's a start. I feel that instead of just following someone's complete direction, all these muscians should each contribute their own musical ideas/sounds/elements to the mix and create an entire sonic landscape. In my opinion that would be much cooler than what I heard on the (above) video. It would also be pretty cool to see what other types of music could be composed through this though as well. Anyway, it'll be interesting to hear how this progresses in the future.

Big Shoes To Fill....

Aw Shucks, that was lame.

Oh well.

J. Tillman at The Church

Last evening I had the pleasure of paying a visit to the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, not for a service (well, not exactly), but to see J. Tillman perform in the Church's intimate side chapel. Let me start by saying I have never been in a Church for a concert, or really anything "non-religiously" affiliated (well, again...not exactly).

Why do I keep saying "not exactly"? Well, because some people can certainly argue that (some) music can be considered a religious experience. I can't argue against it. Okay, moving on!

Now let me REALLY get started by saying this little chapel only holds about 50 people in it, which made the experience all the better. I got to the Church pretty early and after waiting around a bit for the doors to open, I entered the tiny room, sat down in the front pew (yes a pew), and waited anxiously for the show to begin.

Soon after, the opener, "Pearly Gate Music", who happens to be Tillman's younger Brother Zach (who also plays bass for him) came out to perform a few songs of his own. I would consider his music sort of lo-fi-super-reverbed-emo-folk, but if that turns you off, I must say it was pretty good. Zach sang with a true passion that can only come from the heart and although he was a little too much for me at times, he had a solid voice, and a realness to his music.

After Zach's performance I was good and ready (that sounds a little too sexual) for the elder Tillman. A few minuets later, he emerged from the side door of the Chapel with the rest of his 5 piece band (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, bass, and pedal steel). Right from the get go I thought they were great. Tillman's hushed vocals and softly strummed guitar fit perfectly with the setting we were in. While some songs possessed the vocal harmonies fans of his other work with Fleet Foxes, certainly appreciated, others had louder blues/gospel and louder rock sensibilities. Also, for claiming no religious affiliation, (at one point he mentioned he "liked everything and nothing"), many of his songs had a very Christian undertone (maybe even overtone?) to them. Nonetheless, his lyrics, music, and overall performance were extremely passionate and heartfelt.

I had a great time and was extremely pleased at my decision to check out this show. Also I got the chance to shake Josh's hand and thank he and the band for the great performance. I now see he certainly has a hell of a lot more too offer than just being the drummer for Fleet Foxes (he's actually been making music since before joining the band). I highly suggest to any fans of folky, woodsy, acoustic, blues rock, americana type music to check this guy out. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Also, it definitely won't be the last time I catch a show at "The Church". Thanks R5 Productions for giving me the heads up about this show.

Check out a few tunes

In a Parallel Universe The Beatles Never Broke Up

You have GOT to check this out.

According to "James Richards" (Jim Dick..haha!! Sorry, that was inappropriate) somewhere in a parallel universe, which can be found by tripping over a rabbit hole and getting knocked unconscious in Del Puerto Canyon, California, The Beatles never broke up!!!! His story is entirely too intriguing (and absolutely ridicules) for me to explain in its entirety so just go to his website TheBeatlesNeverBrokeUp.com and read about it yourselves.

If it is true....hahahaha never mind. It's some pretty cool music though and if our buddy Jimmy Dick did in fact produce this himself (through mashups, remixing, effects, and whatever else) he should at least be commended for a job well done.

Thanks to DailySwarm for finding this one.

Travis Barker "Forever" Remix

This is already all over the internet, but it just got posted today! (So I feel special because I'm on top of my game today). I' don't think I really ever told anyone, but I'm a huge fan of the Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem song "Forever". It's always on the radio (I don't even voluntarily listen (okay very rarely listen) to the radio anymore but I hear this all the time) but I still haven't really gotten sick of it yet. I might be getting there though, anyway that's besides the point. It's a good song, everyone seriously delivers and it's just a colossal song. That's all besides the point too.

What was the point of this? Oh right, this. Today, a Travis Barker remix of the song got put out. Meh, it's pretty good. No disrespect to TRV$, he's still a killer drummer but he's got better stuff. I really dug his stuff with the late (it's weird saying that) DJ AM.

Anyway, check it out.

Wu Tang Wednesday is BACK

That's right, it's Wednesday, so it's GOT to be the Wu.

Here's your fix, a classic off of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) here's the M.E.T.H.O.D MAN.

Git em!

Bob Dylan Philadelphia 11/09/09

I just got back from seeing the legendary Bob Dylan in concert for the first time (IN THE SECOND ROW!!!!). I hear his concerts are hit or miss but I have to say, I was completely satisfied. The guy has still got it! To me his aged and rugged voice sounded great. It has this character to it and it matches the "grizzled veteran" that is Bob Dylan. And he can still play! He stuck behind the keys for most of the night and wasn't turned up all that loud in the mix, but when he ventured out to play some guitar or harmonica, his musical ability shown through. I've never considered him a "great" guitar player but he impressed me with some pretty nice licks here and there and his harmonica playing was solid.

I can't call myself a HUGE Dylan fan, simply because I don't know enough of his (extremely vast) catalog. But I do have a pretty solid collection of his albums and I'm getting more and more into him as time goes on. Despite that, I have the utmost respect for him and ALL that he has done for music and culture in general. A few setlist high points for me were: the "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" opener, "Desolation Row", "Highway 61", "Workingman's Blues #2", "Ballad of a Thin Man", and the Encore "Like a Rolling Stone", and "Watchtower".

Overall, as I said above, I was (and am) completely satisfied with both Dylan and his backing band, who were extremely tight (highlights were guitarist Charlie Sexton and the drummer who's name escapes me). Although I'm pretty easy to please and have no other performance to compare it to (other than other concerts I've been to) I really have no complaints. I just feel honored to have been able to see the great and legendary Bob Dylan.

I still really can't believe it.

Entire Setlist

1. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
(Bob on keyboard)
2. Man In The Long Black Coat (Bob on guitar)

8. Cold Irons Bound (Bob center stage on harmonica)
9. Desolation Row (Bob on keyboard , Donnie on electric mandolin)
10. Po' Boy (Bob on keyboard and harmonica)

What Is The Future Of The Music Industry?

Guess What ?

Nobody Knows !

Sure statistics might look grim, as fewer and fewer consumers are purchasing music these days. But, as my man Bobby D said, "The Times They Are A-Changin". It seems as though the industry has shifted and to be completely honest, this guy (yeah that's me!) couldn’t be more excited.

"Why is that?" you ask? Well, let me lay it out for you.

Simply put, I think this is an extremely exciting time for music and entertainment as a whole. It might be a little scary for those running the industry, but things couldn’t be better for music fans. (well, some can argue about crappy music being made...but that rant is for another time. To avoid making that mistake, check THIS out).

I look at it this way.

Certainly it's true that companies, labels, ect are loosing money, but things are changing and adaptations need to be made. Nearly everything is in flux and as much as they might pretend they know, not many people really know what is going on. Even more so, nobody knows what is going to happen. This makes it all the better for the young blood coming into the industry.

With the rise of the independent music scene, which includes the DIY (Do It Yourself) approach to production, marketing, and promotions, nearly all aspects involved in the industry need to adapt (to these and all other changes) or they will be left in the dust. I feel the industry needs new and fresh ideas (and people!) to continue to help move it into the future. What better time than now to be a part of all these changes?

Not knowing what is going to happen makes this industry all the more exciting. I truly believe that over the next few years music history will be made and I can not wait to be a part of it.

Although those currently in the industry may be weary of the future, I say bring it on!! I want a piece of the action.

Fugees Friday

Happy Fugees Friday Everyone!!!

Back in 96' The Fugees were on top of the word. Their album "The Score" is a hiphop CLASSIC. So here's a nod to Wyclef, Lauryn Hill, and Pras with the song "Ready or Not" (and you can't forget that Enya sample). There's no way you can't like this one folks.

Have a great weekend everybody.

There's entirely too much going on in this picture. But at the same time, they're not really "doing" anything.

Norton Buffalo: September 28th, 1951- October 30th, 2009

Just this past Friday, harmonica virtuoso Norton Buffalo passed away. Although he has played on over 180 different albums with the likes of artists such as: The Doobie Brothers,Merl Saunders' Rainforest Band,Kenny Loggins, The Jerry Garcia Band, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, and David Grisman, Buffalo was best known as a member of The Steve Miller Band for over 32 years!!! He was a beloved and sought after session musician. Steve Miller was quoted as saying the following regarding Buffalo:

“He was a complete original. He worked with all kinds of people. He did tons and tons of projects. Everybody who worked with him loved him, really enjoyed working with him.”

“He had way more music in him than I could use"

I actually had the pleasure of seeing him perform with the Steve Miller band about two years ago and he was really a great player and brought a huge amount of energy to the stage. I could tell he was having a blast being up on stage. It's really a shame he has passed. Rest in Peace Mr. Buffalo, you will be missed.
