Moe Throwback

Since it seems as though I'm on a little jamband kick here, I figured I'd do a nice throwback to 2002. This moe concert from November 3 at the Kirby Center was my very first time seeing the band.

This night was pretty special for me and was a fantastic introduction to a band who, at the time (and for the next few years), was on top of the scene. Since that date I've gone on to see these guys at least once a year for the past 7 years but this show will always hold a special place in my heart (aww).

A bunch of favorites here but a few are: New York City, Big World, Head, Rise, Money, Buster, Nebraska....aw shit it was all good.

Check it out.

Bob Dylan Philadelphia 11/09/09

I just got back from seeing the legendary Bob Dylan in concert for the first time (IN THE SECOND ROW!!!!). I hear his concerts are hit or miss but I have to say, I was completely satisfied. The guy has still got it! To me his aged and rugged voice sounded great. It has this character to it and it matches the "grizzled veteran" that is Bob Dylan. And he can still play! He stuck behind the keys for most of the night and wasn't turned up all that loud in the mix, but when he ventured out to play some guitar or harmonica, his musical ability shown through. I've never considered him a "great" guitar player but he impressed me with some pretty nice licks here and there and his harmonica playing was solid.

I can't call myself a HUGE Dylan fan, simply because I don't know enough of his (extremely vast) catalog. But I do have a pretty solid collection of his albums and I'm getting more and more into him as time goes on. Despite that, I have the utmost respect for him and ALL that he has done for music and culture in general. A few setlist high points for me were: the "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" opener, "Desolation Row", "Highway 61", "Workingman's Blues #2", "Ballad of a Thin Man", and the Encore "Like a Rolling Stone", and "Watchtower".

Overall, as I said above, I was (and am) completely satisfied with both Dylan and his backing band, who were extremely tight (highlights were guitarist Charlie Sexton and the drummer who's name escapes me). Although I'm pretty easy to please and have no other performance to compare it to (other than other concerts I've been to) I really have no complaints. I just feel honored to have been able to see the great and legendary Bob Dylan.

I still really can't believe it.

Rubblebucket Orchestra

I had the pleasure of catching the Rubbelbucket Orchestra last weekend at the Draught Horse/Cherry Pit just off of Temple's campus in North Philadelphia. This Massachusetts based band's peaceful lyrics and funky, danceable grooves really impressed me and they honestly had one of the most energetic performances I have seen in quite some time. At one point during the show, the band's horn section jumped off stage and began marching, jumping on things, and dancing throughout the bar. It was extremely entertaining and very impressive. Definitely check them out if you get a chance. You can listen to/get a copy of their album HERE

Simple-ly, A Good Time

This past Friday evening I had the pleasure of seeing the Phish tribute band Simple. I've sadly never had the opportunity to actually see Phish themselves perform, but I must say, hearing their songs being played live by a very solid group of musicians was a true treat. The small crowd, and setting of the Draught Horse made for a warm refuge from the freezing weather outside. Not to mention, the great tunes kept us all warm from the uncontrollable dancing that ensued throughout the whole show.

This may actually be the entire setlist, but some highlights for me were: NICU, Maze, Theme from the Bottom, Down with the Disease, Sparkle, and Weekapaug Groove. After the show was over I got the chance to talk to the band a little bit and thank them for the fun time. Although I still have yet to see Phish, Simple was a nice substitute for the time being. I will definitely check these guys out again.
