December 12th Infamous Stringdusters @ The TLA (Free Download)

I somehow failed to mention the band who opened for Railroad Earth when I saw them. A serious bluegrass string band, The Infamous Stringdusters. If you are a fan of bluegrass check these guys out. I was thoroughly impressed.

Here's a copy of their opening performance. Thanks again to Jamie Burks.

December 12th Railroad Earth @ The TLA (Free Download)

Back on December 12th I had the pleasure of finally seeing the band Railroad Earth live. I found a recording of the show so now I can relive it over again.

I'd like to thank Jamie Burks for taping the show.

Give it a listen.

Railroad Earth @ The TLA

This past Saturday I finally got the chance to catch the band Railroad Earth live at the Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia. Let me say I was not disappointed in the least bit and the band's performance was much more than what I had expected.

Prior to the concert, I had been listing to the band's albums for at least a year or so (thanks Ludwig) and had really enjoyed what I heard. It's just all around good music. (on a side note their song "Been Down This Road" happens to be one of my favorite songs for some reason unbeknown to me). Anyway, I had always considered the band to be pretty much a bluegrass band, but according to a writeup on the band's website;

the members of Railroad Earth aren’t losing sleep about what “kind” of music they play – they just play it. When they started out in 2001, they were a bunch of guys interested in playing acoustic instruments together.

After seeing the band live, I've got to say they are absolutely much more than a bluegrass band. They incorporated elements of country, americana jazz (thanks to the saxophone work of the band's multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling) rock and roll, and even had a few Grateful Dead-esque jams thrown in. This is a really talented group of guys, from Todd Sheaffer's lead vocals and song writing to the amazing back and forth "call and response" type instrumentation between Tim Carbone on violin and John Skehan on mandolin, everyone in the band contributed to the great music.

I certainly wasn't the only one who enjoyed the show, as there were rampant smiles and dancing throughout the entire night.

Thank you Railroad Earth.

Give em a listen.

Moe Throwback

Since it seems as though I'm on a little jamband kick here, I figured I'd do a nice throwback to 2002. This moe concert from November 3 at the Kirby Center was my very first time seeing the band.

This night was pretty special for me and was a fantastic introduction to a band who, at the time (and for the next few years), was on top of the scene. Since that date I've gone on to see these guys at least once a year for the past 7 years but this show will always hold a special place in my heart (aww).

A bunch of favorites here but a few are: New York City, Big World, Head, Rise, Money, Buster, Nebraska....aw shit it was all good.

Check it out.

Bob Dylan Philadelphia 11/09/09

I just got back from seeing the legendary Bob Dylan in concert for the first time (IN THE SECOND ROW!!!!). I hear his concerts are hit or miss but I have to say, I was completely satisfied. The guy has still got it! To me his aged and rugged voice sounded great. It has this character to it and it matches the "grizzled veteran" that is Bob Dylan. And he can still play! He stuck behind the keys for most of the night and wasn't turned up all that loud in the mix, but when he ventured out to play some guitar or harmonica, his musical ability shown through. I've never considered him a "great" guitar player but he impressed me with some pretty nice licks here and there and his harmonica playing was solid.

I can't call myself a HUGE Dylan fan, simply because I don't know enough of his (extremely vast) catalog. But I do have a pretty solid collection of his albums and I'm getting more and more into him as time goes on. Despite that, I have the utmost respect for him and ALL that he has done for music and culture in general. A few setlist high points for me were: the "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" opener, "Desolation Row", "Highway 61", "Workingman's Blues #2", "Ballad of a Thin Man", and the Encore "Like a Rolling Stone", and "Watchtower".

Overall, as I said above, I was (and am) completely satisfied with both Dylan and his backing band, who were extremely tight (highlights were guitarist Charlie Sexton and the drummer who's name escapes me). Although I'm pretty easy to please and have no other performance to compare it to (other than other concerts I've been to) I really have no complaints. I just feel honored to have been able to see the great and legendary Bob Dylan.

I still really can't believe it.

Phish Festival 8

Starting today, October 30th, through November 1st is Phish's Festival 8 !!!!!

I'm personally excited to see which full album cover they will be performing on Halloween night. As of right now, on the Halloween Set page of the festival, the only albums left "alive" are: Jimi Hendri's Electric Ladyland, Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Prince's Purple Rain, King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Rolling Stones Exile on Main St, Radiohead Kid A, Micheal Jackson's Thriller, David Bowie's Hunky Dory, and MGMT's Oracular Spectacular.

I don't know if everybody is all MJ'ed out but my money is on Thriller.

Anyway, the Phish Coventry Blog posted the boys' soundcheck earlier today. I haven't listened to it yet but I think it's actually a soundboard recording which is pretty awesome. Here's the unofficial setlist:

Festival 8 Soundcheck Jam

Devil with a Blue Dress>

Starship Trooper

Fuck Your Face Tease

Saturday Morning Funk-Up

Good afternoon folks, here's some Club D'elf layin down those funky funky grooves to help get you through this lousy weather. I don't know about you but I've had enough of this "nor'easter" B.S.

MGMT Live

I find it weird that I've known about this band and really enjoyed them for about 2 years now but I've never seen any of their live music before. That being said, check out these two live performances of their songs Kids and Electric Feel. Pretty cool stuff but from what I have heard they still aren't really too good live. I hope they get better and their next album is as good as the last. (you know, try to avoid the ole "Sophomore Slump")

Monotonix = Absolutely Insane (Band of the Week)

I recently heard about this band and decided to check them out. I don't know very much about them, other than they are from Tel Aviv, Israel and their live shows are absolutely ridicules. I would consider their sound a cross between Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath, and Wolfmother.

When they can, the band sets up (a minimal drum kit, and a guitar) on the ground floor of wherever they are playing and proceed to go completely ballistic, I'm talking ape-shit here. The singer runs, jumps, crashes, and climbs whatever structure or thing (human or not) in site.

John Lomax of the Houston Press had this to say about them:

"If there was a spectrum on which every shade of chaos was ranked hierarchically, you would have to peg a Monotonix show somewhere to the left of total, complete and utter mayhem. Maybe you could call it demented pandemonium."

"They have to be simultaneously the most physically fit and mentally deranged band I have ever seen, and already I have seen them three times. these shows are something beyond chaos. In fact, they are the perfect band for our time, the soundtrack and visual representation of a world that seems to be slipping out of control"

These guys are on tour now and I feel like it would be quite an experience to check them out. DO IT (and if you come back alive, let me know how it was).

The Lips Are Coming

Attention! The Flaming Lips are coming to Penn's Landing Festival Pier in Philadelphia on Saturday August 29th. That is all. Carry on.

I wish i went to The Roots Picnic.....

I'm not going to dwell on this for too long...but I wish I went to The Roots Picnic this past Saturday. I went down to Festival Pier to check things out, some guy tried selling me a ticket for $100 bucks, I "respectfully" declined. I think it's ridiculous people try screwing you over like that, but I guess people who really wanted to go would have paid that much. Anyway, for everybody who did go, I hope you had a damn good time. For all those who didn't go, check out some videos of what we all missed. Some of these videos aren't the best quality but some are pretty decent as well. I still don't think they give the live experience justice though. Oh well, I guess there's always next year.....
