The King of Pop: Podcast Dedication

Rest in Peace: Michael Jackson

I realize everyone already knows this, but i still feel it's necessary to post something about it. I still can't believe it happened. Michael Jackson is gone, and at only 51 years old. The world is truly mourning. No matter how weird and messed up people want to say he was, in my opinion he could do no wrong. He really was the King of Pop.

All the controversy, problems, his difficult childhood, pressure, because of all that stuff I honestly feel his actions were not completely. his fault.

I say we remember him by the fantastic music he made. Records like "Off the Wall", "Bad", and the world's #1 selling album of all time, "Thriller".

The moonwalk.

The glove.

High pants and white socks.

The song "Will You Be There" from "Free Willy"

His performance at Motown 25

Those are things that Michale Jackson should be remembered by.

Rest in peace MJ, I know I will miss you.

New Beck Project "Record Club"

This news came out a few days(or weeks?) ago but I felt as though it was/is still newswor...blogworthy:

Beck's
new project, Record Club, will consist of:
(from Jambase)
a regular meeting of various musicians to record an entire album in one day. Due to the time constraints involved in recording a record in a day, an album will be chosen to be covered and used as a framework for the proceedings. Nothing will be rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track from these sessions will be uploaded once a week on Beck.com, as well as through the web sites of those involved in the project.

Record Club will be an ongoing experiment. Visitors to the site will be able to follow progress from week to week.

The first album attempted - one of the few everyone could agree on - will be The Velvet Underground & Nico.

This seems like a really cool idea and I hope they continue on with it. I can definitely foresee some really interesting stuff coming out of this.

HERE is a video of the first session/song. I think it sounds great.

I give you...KICKSVILLE.

(From their website) Because I can't really even describe them

Kicksville. Population at last count: 58 and growing fast. Founded as a creative vacation resort by Mayor Mike Stehr and Commissioner Conrad St. Clair, it's grown into a musical collective, artistic movement, and a virtual community. Everything is created from scratch by Kicksville's citizens, a team of musicians, artists, writers, and tech geeks who commute to Kicksville from twelve different cities on three continents and who've worked with a dizzying range of other artists ranging from Laurie Anderson to Van Halen and dozens of others, including Queen, BB King, King Crimson and members of the Grateful Dead.

The music of Kicksville ranges from the Malian blues of Kalamaya to the surrealist funk of Dumfukistan to the dark industrial throttle of Krankypants. Incorporating improvisation, painstaking programming, melodic sensibility, bizarre sound effects, and award-winning poetry, genre-defying is a lame cliche that doesn't even come close to describing Kicksville.

I first heard of these guys about 2 or 3 years ago at All Good Music Festival. I happened to be wandering around on either the second or third day of the festival when I heard some interesting sounds off in the distance. I made my way to where the sounds were coming from, which happened to be the Ropeadope sidestage and subsequently, from the band Kicksville. I had never and still to this day haven't ever (as far as I can remember) seen or heard anything like this before. From their thumping bass, 19-something speech samples, electronic experimentations, and pounding rhythms; this band is well, somehow enjoyable. They have since released three albums, Enter the Flavor Hut, The Results of a Higher Mission, and lastly Kicksville The Singles- Season 1, which is a collection of weekly single "episodes" of sonic ambition that were released over a 13 week period. They have also released quite a number of episodes for Kicksville- Season 2 as well. Check em out HERE. Buy their music. See some videos HERE', you know the routine.

Macho Maddness Ohhhhhh Yeeaaaah

Ohhhhhhh Yeeeeaaaaaah it's MACHO MONDAY!!!!!! In honor of the recent release of The Macho Man Randy Savage's DVD "Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection" I thought I would write a lil some some about the Macho King himself. Despite being an Intercontinental Champion, a two time WWF champion, a King of the Ring winner, and a four time WCW champion, as well as one of the most intense wrestlers of all time, The Macho Man also has a RAP ALBUM under his belt (no pun intended...okay it was intended). Yes, that's right, back in 2003 The Macho Man released a rap album (hilariously) titled "Be A Man" (which is also a Hulk Hogan diss track on the album). Nearly the entire album is dedicated to kicking ass, wrestling, rapping, being a man, and kicking more ass. Everyone needs to hear this album...well at least a song or two , but before you do you must see the Awesome, Macho Madness, that is Randy Savage.

I leave you firstly with a few fine clips of the man and secondly a couple of his songs as well. Enjoy! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAHH

Phish and Bruce Springsteen Play Together At Bonnaroo

I'm not too much of a Bruce Springsteen fan but i AM a pretty big Phish fan so I suppose this is pretty cool.

Bruce Springsteen performed a three-hour set with the E Street Band one night and joined Phish on stage another.

Springsteen and Phish were the headliners at the eighth annual festival, held on a giant farm in the Tennessee hills. Phish first played Friday night, then Springsteen played Saturday. The two worlds - far apart in rock 'n' roll - combined during Phish's closing set Sunday night.

Phish frontman and guitarist Trey Anastasio introduced Springsteen as "my boyhood hero and still hero." Anastasio recalled seeing Springsteen perform when he was young as a foundational experience, forever giving him unrealistically high expectations for concerts.

With Springsteen as lead vocalist and joining Anastasio on guitar, they played Mack Rice's "Mustang Sally" and Springsteen's "Bobby Jean" and "Glory Days". Anastasio beamed throughout while the Boss immediately played bandleader, even calling for a "little more keyboard" for Page McConnell.

It was a symbolic moment for a Bonnaroo notable for its musical cross-pollination and expanded view of what it means to be a "jam band."

Though Bonnaroo was founded as a roots-rock, jam band festival, it years ago adopted a wider musical spectrum that draws from all genres, including hip-hop, heavy metal and pop. Bonnaroo's origins were easy to recall with Phish - today's pre-eminent jam band, reunited after a five-year hiatus - performing for the first time together at Bonnaroo, a festival founded in the image of the Vermont band's destination concerts.

But as Bonnaroo has grown to become arguably the country's biggest music festival, its essence still remains centered on live performance and virtuosity - which came in all sounds over the weekend.

Springsteen might rarely deviate much from his decades-long catalog, but he (again) proved there's no better showman in rock. Across three hours, he repeatedly ran into the crowd, leaning out across the barricades, taking requests - even the out-of-season "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" - and dancing with a young, awe-struck girl.

The Boss also struck a tone mindful of the current economic climate. Along with his songs about down-on-their-luck characters and blue collar life, Springsteen encored with Stephen Foster's Civil War-era "Hard Times Come Again No More."

"You pick up the newspaper and you look out and you seen millions of jobs here in the country lost. Hundreds of thousands of jobs every month," said Springsteen. "You see things that I never thought I'd see. There's many, many folks struggling out there."

He wasn't the only one to touch on the recession. Jenny Lewis, the singer-songwriter who sometimes fronts the California band Rilo Kiley, introduced a new song about today's times, noting she comes from "a state that's totally bankrupt." On the song, "Big Way," she sang, "They're gonna get you in a big way."

But Springsteen was far from the only showman at Bonnaroo. Few weren't impressed by The Rev. Al Green's performance Friday afternoon. The 63-year-old Memphis resident sang his soul classics - "Let's Stay Together," "Here I Am" - with a gospel flair, hitting high notes that he said proved he still had it.

Wanting to come down and dance with the crowd - whom he tossed roses to - Green admonished the "yellow shirts" (the security guards): "We didn't come out there to hurt nobody. We came to love."

There were many neo-soul acts at Bonnaroo who showed influence from Green. Among them: Raphael Saadiq, who sped up his pace on his "100 Yard Dash," and an afro-less Erykah Badu, who performed a slow-burning set Sunday afternoon. She was followed by Snoop Dogg, who declined a lazy summer show and instead rocked with a bass-thumping, audience-bouncing performance.

Green played at nearly the same time Friday as David Byrne. Some hoped they would unite to perform Green's "Take Me to the River," which Byrne memorably covered when he was with the Talking Heads. Instead, Byrne played it himself. It was part of a memorable set of art funk for Byrne, who brought his conceptual stage show of dancers to Bonnaroo.

Many other pairings between the 100-plus acts at the festival did happen.

The Beastie Boys were joined by Nas to perform a new song off their upcoming record. Elvis Costello, who performed solo, joined Lewis for her "Carpetbaggers." Byrne, who curated a stage on Friday, hopped up to sing with the buzzed-about Dirty Projectors.

Jimmy Buffett was a late addition and joined his Coral Reefer All-Stars, who were being led by his recent discovery, guitarist Ilo Ferreria. Buffett said he had some difficulty adjusting to the early noon showtime (especially for a festival that goes until 4 a.m.) but said margaritas were still in order.

Some of the best jamming came from the tent devoted to African music on Friday.

Femi Kuti, Amadou & Mariam and - in particular - "Vieux" Farka Toure played top notch Afropop from West African. Toure, the son of Mali legend Ali Farka Toure, tore through bluesy, funky tunes. He led the crowd in a chant, only afterward informing them of the translation: "Love is good."

The same tent on Saturday transformed into a bluegrass stage featuring the Del McCoury Band and the David Grisman Quintet. There, the solos became fast-paced banjo and acoustic guitar flourishes.

And some of the strangest, most psychedelic jamming came from the mostly electronic outfit Animal Collective, who hypnotically pushed their "Fireworks" past the 10-minute mark.

Ashley Capps, the co-founder of Bonnaroo and the president of AC Entertainment (which produces the festival with Superfly Productions), said about 75,000 attended. That's up significantly from last year's fest, no doubt partially thanks to the thousands of devoted Phish fans who were eager to see their reunited band.

Capps acknowledged Thursday, with its pounding thunderstorms and tornado warnings, was "a challenging night." But the rest of the festival was marked by mostly sunny, clear and hot weather. Capps said it was one of the smoothest-running Bonnaroos yet.

None benefitted from the good weather more than Wilco, who played a scintillating sunset performance Saturday, running the gamut of their earlier material as well as songs off their upcoming disc, "Wilco (The Album)."

The band played on the main stage before Springsteen, and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy could already feel the Boss's presence.

"If anybody boos us tonight, we have a built-in excuse," said Tweedy. "They're just yelling 'Bruuuuuce.'"

Any summary of the festival is sure to leave many out. Others performing included: Nine Inch Nails, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Public Enemy, Gov't Mule, Grizzly Bear, Lucinda Williams, Santigold, The Decemberists, the Mars Volta, moe, Of Montreal, Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk and Neko Case.

Again, HERE is the link.

Charles Hamilton/ J Dilla

I don't believe this. Earlier this week, rapper Charles Hamilton released the cover to his upcoming album, "This Perfect Life" which caused a huge uproar in the hip hop community due to the fact that the legendary, late great producer J Dilla was credited as the album's executive producer (as his real name James Yancey). According to Hamilton, he has a "strictly paranormal" relationship with Dilla and was highly influenced by his ghost or some nonsense. I guess in a way I can understand why he decided to give J Dilla credit for his inspiration, which can be looked at as paying homage and showing respect. BUT, there is more to it.

Apparently he also lied about speaking to Dilla's mother, family, and others that knew him. He also said he would give all proceeds from the album to Dilla's estate. The problem with that? The album is FREE. Damn homie, come on. I realize he is a kid and probably doesn't see the wrong in this but still, don't lie man, the truth will come out.

Check out Detroit DJ House Shoes speaking about the whole matter here

Anyway, this isn't the first time Charles the Hamilton has failed. Check out some more of his misteps HERE. Too bad the dude's actually talented though. Mannnnn.

If you are as frustrated as I am about this, check out this video of him getting socked in the face by a girl!

Podcast Number One

I put this together the other night. It's about a half an hour long mix of different dance, electronica, type stuff from artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Pretty Lights, DJ Mark Farina, and some others. Check it out.

This is absolutely hilarious.

I wish i went to The Roots Picnic.....

I'm not going to dwell on this for too long...but I wish I went to The Roots Picnic this past Saturday. I went down to Festival Pier to check things out, some guy tried selling me a ticket for $100 bucks, I "respectfully" declined. I think it's ridiculous people try screwing you over like that, but I guess people who really wanted to go would have paid that much. Anyway, for everybody who did go, I hope you had a damn good time. For all those who didn't go, check out some videos of what we all missed. Some of these videos aren't the best quality but some are pretty decent as well. I still don't think they give the live experience justice though. Oh well, I guess there's always next year.....

Terry Urban's Santigold "Southerngold" Mixtape

There is/was a great big hoopla (yes a hoopla) about this mixtape created by Terry Urban that mixs Santigold samples with various southern rap vocals from artists such as Young Jeezy, Slim Thug, Rick Ross, Pitbull and others. I'm not going to get into the whole thing but you can read about it HERE or even HERE. It's pretty cool, go download it HERE while you still can.

The Cleveland Show..?

Apparently there is going to be a Family Guy spin off staring Cleveland Brown "coming soon" to Fox. HERE is a trailer for it. I'm a pretty big Family Guy fan and I feel they have stepped it up on their shows so hopefully this will be good as well. You can't tell that much from the clip but it looks pretty good and it seems like it'll have the same type of humor as Family Guy. Check it out.

Fix Your Face !!! (DJ AM and Travis Barker)

The combination of DJ AM and Travis Barker is absolutely mind blowing. I knew of their project since the fatal plane crash that left both Travis and AM critically injured and four others dead back in late September, but for some reason I never checked out any of their music until now. They play a mashup of covers ranging from Rush, MGMT, Guns N' Roses,Bell Biv DeVoe's 'Poison', Daft Punk, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Jay-Z, The Who, and countless others. And they do a damn good job at it. They have released two free mixtapes (which can be downloaded from their site) and they are pretty crazy. Actually, really crazy, as in crazy good. Definitely check them both out, they are absolutely nuts, really, I MEAN IT. Go download them right now and prepare to get wild.

And The Band Of The Week is....

Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu !!!!!!!!! That's right, this week's band that you may not have heard of is "The Big Wu"

The musical influences that helped create the Big Wu were loud, and large, and heartfelt. And through the years, this Minnesota troupe has stepped into the role of creating the type of music that wants to course through your veins. Writing in truly American styles, the Big Wu slides, bends, rumbles, and chicken-picks with on the top intensity and good-time fervor.

This is inclusive rock-n-roll, people. So boys bring your girls, parents bring your kids, therapists bring your patients. Let the Big Wu loosen the straps of your daily burden with real vibrations.

These guys have been touring less and less over the years but every year they continue to put on their festival "The Big Wu Family Reunion" (currently in its tenth year). Also their 1999 album "Tracking Buffalo Through the Bathtub" is one of my all time favorites.

Check out some of their tunes:

I Love Late Night Television

Over the past year or so I have grown to absolutely love late night television. No, no I'm not talking about Infomercials or what's on HBO (real sex, taxicab confessions, is that even still on?) or that little transition when Cinemax becomes Skinemax... I think I'm digging myself a bit of a hole here, anyway I digress. I'm talking about the late night talk shows; Leno, Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, and Craig Ferguson. Sure I like some of the hosts a bit more than others but over time they have all grown on me. For example, when Jimmy Fallon first started off, I thought he was horrible, but as he has continued on over the last few months I feel he has gotten a bit more comfortable. Additionally I've realized that Craig Ferguson, who I don't get to watch all that much, is absolutely hysterical.

Sure each host has their strengths and weaknesses. I'm partial to Leno (I don't even know why) but I appreciate Letterman's wit and sarcasm . I don't watch Jimmy Kimmel all that much but he isn't too bad either and Conan is growing on me as well.

All these guys are entertaining and because they are on everyday, they are always current and on top of the "news" of the day. This is sort of lame but from seeing them so often, I feel like I actually know them, like the viewer actually sees how these hosts are in real life ( Sure I could be completely wrong) Also, they can at least give me a good laugh before I go to bed at night and for that, I'm grateful.

God bless Late Night TV.

You can check out all the current episodes of the shows online.

Jimi Hendrix was Murdered??!!?!

If this is true...what the hell !!!!

Jimi Hendrix was murdered by his manager, according to a new book by a former roadie. James "Tappy" Wright alleges that Hendix's manager, Michael Jeffrey, once drunkenly confessed to killing the guitarist by stuffing pills into his mouth and washing them down with several bottles of red wine.

Jeffrey -- who stood to collect $2 million as a beneficiary on Hendrix's life insurance policy -- feared Hendrix was planning to fire him in favor of a new handler, according to a report about the book, titled 'Rock Roadie', as reported in Mail on Sunday. Wright claims Jeffrey -- who died in a plane crash in 1973 -- told him in 1971 that Hendrix was "worth more to him dead than alive."

Hendrix died in September 1970. An ambulance crew found the 27-year-old musician's body at London's Samarkand Hotel, in the room of an acquaintance named Monika Dannemann. His cause of death was listed as barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit.

Wright writes that Jeffrey confessed, "I was in London the night of Jimi's death and together with some old friends ... we went round to Monika's hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth ... then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe ... That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I'd lose everything."

The Takeover ( The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien)

Last night was Conan O'Brien's debut as the host of The Tonight Show, replacing Jay Leno who was the show's host for 17 years. Don't worry though, Jay will be back soon enough with his own show that will air on weeknights at 10:00. Apparently, according to "critics" (what the hell do they know anyway?) Conan's debut was met with some mixed reviews. Personally, I thought the show was pretty good, I'm not a huge fan of Conan (I don't hate him) but I thought it was a fairly solid debut. Some of the "sketches", which were more like full montages were a bit long but they had some high points as well. Also, the show's first guest, Will Ferrell, was funny as usual. One negative thing I must say is that Pearl Jam's performance at the end of the show was HORRIBLE. They had a huge amount of energy but I thought they sounded awful (was it just me?).

Anyway, I wish Conan good luck on his new show. I'm sure he will do a good job (but in my opinion not better than Jay) and have many memorable moments on the show in the years to come. Good luck.

Check out some clips from the show HERE. Also the full episode should be up pretty soon as well.

Questlove and Dr. Cornel West

I feel like Questlove (Ahmir Thompson, the drummer from The Roots) bears an extremely close resemblance to Dr. Cornel West. Or maybe Dr. Cornel West bears a semblance to Questlove? Anyway, one is a badass drummer, DJ, music aficionado and record producer while the other is a philosopher, author, pastor, civil rights activist, and professor at Princeton University. Both are pretty sick.

I dunno, check em out. (maybe it's just the fro, beard, suit, glasses?)

Eminem and Bruno at the MTV Movie Awards

If you haven't yet heard of the "incident" which involved Eminem and Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen's gay Austrian model character) last night at the MTV Movie Awards, check out the video HERE

Apparently the incident was actually rehearsed, and if so it was a clever ploy on MTV's part. It got the show a good amount of press and that incident alone probably got the show some extra viewers as well. It'll also probably increase the replay value of the show as well. If it was staged, Em was a good sport about the whole thing and pulled off being pissed pretty well (although I don't think it was that hard to do so). If it wasn't staged, it actually makes it even more hilarious.
